Gervonta Davis went the distance against Isaac Cruz to defend his WBA (Regular) lightweight title via a unanimous decision victory at the Staples Center on 5th December, but in the wake of the victory, “Tank” earned some armour-piercing statements from his divisional rival Ryan Garcia, who called him the “weakest” in the division, as well as claiming that Gervonta is picking fights against “C level fighters”.
In recent years, both Ryan Garcia and Gervonta Davis have risen in the lightweight division as two of the most prominent names, and the two undefeated pugilists also share a history of grudge that dates all the way back to January this year, when Garcia said he could beat Davis within two rounds.
While Garcia is yet to return to the ring since defeating Luke Campbell on 2nd January, Davis has already had a couple appearances in the squared circle this year, starting with his 11th round TKO victory over Mario Barrios for the WBA (Regular) super lightweight title, followed by his title defense against Issac Cruz this weekend.
Despite dealing with anxiety and depression, followed by sustaining a hand injury caused Garcia’s fights with Javier Fortuna and JoJo Diaz getting called off respectively, on top of his inactivity causing him to be stripped off of his WBC interim lightweight title, ‘King Ryan’ found Davis’ victory over Cruz to be the perfect opportunity to reignite his tussle with the three division champion.
Ryan Garcia wants a fight against Gervonta Davis
Shortly after the Davis vs Cruz fight, Garcia took to Twitter, calling out ‘Tank’ by saying that he’s only going after ‘C level’ fighters and termed him the weakest at 135. Furthermore, Garcia not only claimed that Davis’ 12-round unanimous decision victory to be a near-miss but also named Leo Santa Cruz, whom Davis defeated in October last year, as his toughest challenge so far.
“Gervonta gets away with fighting c level fighters, out of all the lightweights he’s the weakest!!! His toughest test was Leo Santa Cruz, almost lost tonight bring it on I’ve been calling you out for awhile…” tweeted Garcia.
