Undefeated lightweight boxer Ryan Garcia has zero ego to admit that despite his massive social media popularity, he does need Gervonta “Tank” Davis in order to become the front face in the sport.
I want Tank Davis next: Ryan Garcia
Ryan Garcia, the former interim champion has been calling for a fight against Gervonta Davis for over one and a half year but unfortunately, the bout has never come close to fruition. Instead, “King Ryan” faced Emmanuel Tagoe on 9th April and is now set to take on Javier Fortuna on 16th July at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
All that being said, the 23-year-old acknowledges that he needs to face someone who matches his fame in order to become the top dog land huge PPV numbers and believes its none other than Davis, the three division champion whom Garcia needs to face.
“I want Tank Davis next,” said Garcia while promoting the Fortuna fight, “A huge pay-per-view fight would involve me and somebody else. And I probably do need a little bit of Tank Davis to make a super mega-fight, but I don’t have an ego to admit that. I don’t care. I know Tank is a big fighter, and I am as well. Whoever wins that fight becomes the face of boxing.”
“[Davis] said ‘f’ me. Then why are you screaming my name talking about ‘you next’ [after the Romero fight]. Why should I shut up?” Garcia went on, “He’s the one talking like that. Now it’s like either you want to do it or do you not want to do it. Don’t tell me you want to fight if you’re really not going to be about it. He can say shut up all he wants. He wants that fight.”
The summit of the 135-pound latter currently has Devin Haney as the undisputed champion, with Vasiliy Lomachenko and Teofimo Lopez Jr as the top contenders. While Joseph “JoJo” Diaz is being looked at as the most plausible fighter for Garcia after Fortuna, he is not batting any eye towards that fight and has his aim set for Davis.
“I’m pretty sure I want to fight the bigger and better fighter in Gervonta Davis. I’m not worried about JoJo Diaz,” Garcia added. [H/T Boxingscene.com]
