Former WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO champion of the world Andy Ruiz Jr marked a unanimous decision victory over Chris Arreola at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

The fight marked Ruiz’s return to action after a hiatus of a year and four months since the former unified champion lost his world titles against Anthony Joshua in December 2019.

Arreola’s previous fight dates further back to August 2019 when he lost to Adam Kownacki via unanimous decision at the Barclays Center in New York City, setting almost a two year gap between his fights.

Recovering from early knockdown, Ruiz showcased blistering speed to overpower Arreola

As the fight kicked off, Ruiz took to the offensive in the first round, landing body jabs to Arreola to get “The Nightmare” into the backfoot. However, Arreola bounced back strong in the second round, dropping Ruiz to the canvas who got back up on fumbling feet.

However, the knockdown appeared to change Ruiz’s approach as the Mexican embarked on connecting huge body and face jabs to Arreola, who connected a right hook in the 4th round.

One after another combination hits from Ruiz resulted in Arreola getting a bloody nose by the 6th round and kept on receiving one-twos from Ruiz who started the proper utilization of his speed.

From round 8 it appeared that Arreola had hurt his shoulder which slowed down the 40-year-old’s offense. On the other hand, Ruiz had picked up the pace and continued to display great jabbing power and distance management.

With Ruiz taking the helm of the remaining rounds and Arreola sustaining his injured shoulder, the fight ended in unanimous decision for Ruiz, who was scored 117-110, 118-109 and 118-109 by all three judges.
