The basketball world is mourning the loss of Al Attles, a legendary figure in the history of the Golden State Warriors. Attles, who passed away at the age of 87, was a beloved player, coach, and ambassador for the team. Alvin “Al” Attles spent over six decades with the Warriors, making an indelible mark on the franchise. Born on November 7, 1936, in Newark, New Jersey, Attles’ basketball journey began at North Carolina A&T State University, where he excelled as a player. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors in 1960 and quickly became known for his tenacity and defensive prowess.

Player and Coach

Al Attles played 11 seasons with the Warriors, transitioning from the Philadelphia Warriors to the San Francisco Warriors, and finally the Golden State Warriors. Known as “The Destroyer” for his aggressive playing style, he averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. However, his impact extended beyond his playing days.

In 1969, Al Attles became one of the first Black head coaches in the NBA, taking on the role of player-coach. He led the Warriors to their first NBA Championship on the West Coast in 1975, becoming the second Black head coach to win an NBA title. His coaching career spanned 13 seasons, during which he amassed a record of 557-518 and led the team to six playoff appearances.

A Lifelong Warrior

After retiring from coaching, Al Attles continued to serve the Warriors in various capacities, including as a general manager and community ambassador. His dedication to the team and the Bay Area community earned him the affectionate title of “Mr. Warrior.” Attles was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2019, a testament to his enduring legacy.
