Oklahoma State University football players will be sporting a unique addition to their helmets this season: QR codes. These codes, designed to be visible in close-up shots during broadcasts and on social media, will link directly to a general team fund that benefits every student-athlete on the roster.
The tweet from @BleacherReport read:
“OSU players will wear QR codes on their helmets this season that link to the general team fund for every student-athlete on the roster, via @CowboyFB. Close shots during broadcasts and photos posted to social media are expected to raise the team’s NIL value.”
This announcement highlights the creative strategies being employed to support student-athletes in the evolving landscape of college sports.
The Concept Behind the QR Codes
The QR codes will be featured on the back of each player’s helmet as 1.5-square-inch decals, incorporating the player’s name and number in the design. These codes will link directly to the general team fund, allowing fans to contribute to the NIL efforts of the entire team. This initiative is part of the “Saddle Up Campaign” organized by Pokes With A Purpose, an OSU collective dedicated to supporting student-athletes.
How the QR Codes Will Work
Although the QR codes may not be visible from the stands during games, they are expected to be prominently featured in close-up shots during broadcasts and in photos posted on social media. This visibility is anticipated to significantly boost the team’s NIL value throughout the season. Additionally, the QR codes will be placed on each player’s bag tag for use during “The Walk” on game days and for travel, as well as on coasters in premium areas of Boone Pickens Stadium and on signage throughout the stadium.
