Golden Boy CEO Oscar De La Hoya has dropped a major hint about the much-anticipated fight between IBF and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and former  WBO light middleweight titleholder Jaime Munguía, suggesting that the bout could be scheduled on the Cinco de Mayo weekend this year.

Oscar De La Hoya is already planning the 2021 calendar, and he’s planning big. The Golden Boy Promotions chief, who just celebrated the victory of Ryan García’s 7th round victory against Luke Campbell, is already beginning to open up on GGG vs Munguía.

Golovkin vs Munguía on Cinco de Mayo weekend will be ‘explosive’: Oscar De La Hoya

In an exclusive interview with BoxingScene.com, De La Hoya revealed that its the bout that the focus is on right now, as well as spilt the beans on the time he’s aiming to hold the fight, which is the 2021 Cinco de Mayo weekend.

“That’s the fight that we’re working on,” said De La Hoya, “that’s the fight that everyone’s interested in.”

The Cinco de Mayo, which is celebrated annually on 5th May to celebrate the Mexican Army’s victory at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 against the French, is the right time according to De La Hoya to pit the Mexican pugilist against the Kazakhstani machine.

“Cinco de Mayo,” the 47-year-old promoter went on, “Imagine that championship fight headlining on that weekend. It will be explosive.”

Interestingly, the same matchup was originally proposed three years back, after a 21-year-old Munguía’s originally slated opponent Canelo Álvarez, who failed a drug test, was replaced by Golovkin for their May 2018 match in Las Vegas. However, the bout was later dropped by Nevada State Athletic Commission.

GGG (41–1–1, 36 KOs) recently defended his IBF and IBO belts against Kamil Szeremeta on 18th December at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The undefeated Munguía (36-0, 29 KOs), who is co-promoted by Golden Boy and Zanfer Promotions, had his latest victory against Tureano Johnson on 30th October at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California where he clinched the vacant WBO Inter-Continental middleweight title.
