In an attempt to “advance equality and social justice”, the National Basketball Association and the National Basketball Players Association have established the National Basketball Social Justice Coalition. The newly formed coalition’s agenda involves raising awareness, educate and enact “meaningful reform” on a variety of social justice topics, including voting access and criminal justice system reform from the ground level itself.

Prominent figures from the organization will also act as a fraction of the 15 member group with NBA commissioner Adam Silver, NBA deputy commissioner Mark Tatum and NBPA executive director Michele Roberts marking their stay.

The need for an increase in the awareness and the action against the unjust matters in the society saw a spike following several instances which prompted the NBA Players to take a stand. “Black Lives Matter,” “I Can’t Breathe” and “Respect Us”, were some of the messages written on jerseys ever since the NBA restart inside the bubble.

Players will also constitute the inaugural coalition with Donovan Mitchell (Jazz), Carmelo Anthony (Trail Blazers), Karl-Anthony Towns (Timberwolves), Avery Bradley (Lakers) and Sterling Brown (Bucks) being the pool of the players entrusted with the task.

Ever since the restart in Orlando, franchises have been trying to rope in several key figures such as former first lady Michelle Obama, motivational speaker Eric Thomas and New York Knicks legend and former United States Senator Bill Bradley. The prominent speakers’ words will help the coalition take their first step in the battle against inequalities in society and creating positive change.
