Former unified lightweight world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko (15-2, 11 KOs) has his next fight scheduled for 11th December as the Ukrainian is pitted against former IBF titleholder Richard Commey (30-3, 27 KOs) of Ghana at the Madison Square Garden.

After losing his WBA (Super) and WBO belts against the current unified champion Teofimo Lopez in October last year, Lomachenko made a strong comeback against Japanese pugilist Masayoshi Nakatani on 26th June, earning a 9th round TKO victory at the Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.

Lomachenko vs Commey: Loma’s last opponent before Teofimo Lopez rematch?

Although he called for a rematch against Lopez on the heels of defeating Nakatani, Lomachenko will have to wait for his second outing against “The Takeover”, but for now his next faceoff will be against Commey.

However, Loma is eager to be patient to have his shot at Lopez and to regain his belts, even if he has to wait until 2022.

“Everybody saw how I won and everybody has been waiting for the rematch,” said Lomachenko last month, “So, let’s make the rematch. … I understand he has a fight in the future. But after. How about after? Next year at the beginning of the year. December. January. February. I’m waiting.”

Commey, who held the IBF lightweight crown in 2019, lost it to Lopez as well, who went on to defeat Loma up next to unify all three belts and establish himself as the new unified lightweight champ.

Even though Lomachenko is facing one of Lopez’s victims, Commey has been on the bucket list of many lightweights, including the current WBC titleholder Devin Haney, who has been wishing to trade blows with the Ghanaian to defend his green and gold belt.

Before Loma can think about his Lopez rematch next month, a win over Commey this December will mark his second win of 2021, further solidifying his claim over avenging the loss.

However, “The Matrix” looked remarkable against Nakatani, compared to the unanimous decision loss against Lopez and will be looking forward to punch hard against Commey later this year.

A former ABU (African Boxing Union) and WBC International Silver lightweight champion, Commey clinched the vacant IBF belt against Isa Chaniev in February 2019 and went on to defend it against Ray Beltrán in June, before losing to Lopez in December via 2nd round TKO.
