Kai Havertz nets first senior hat-trick in Chelsea’s 6-0 rout of Barnsley

Chelsea’s record signing Kai Havertz registered his first goal with his new club in a thumping win against Championship side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup third round. 

Chelsea were ahead early at Stamford Bridge following Tammy Abraham’s goal in the 19th minute. The 21-year-old latched onto a ball from Mason Mount after a deceiving dummy by Tammy Abraham. Havertz put his effort into the net with a deft left-footed finish.

After finishing the first half at 2-0, the hosts proceeded to kill off the game with a goal from Ross Barkley four minutes after the break. Havertz doubled his Chelsea account after impressive pressing by the Chelsea’s front line won them the ball. Tammy Abraham set up the ball for Havertz, who only had the goalkeeper to beat.

Right after the hour mark, Havertz sealed his hat-trick with the easiest of finishes. A ball from over the top by Abraham forced the keeper into an awkward situation right at the edge of the box. Havertz proceeded to roll the ball into an empty net to extend the lead to 6-0.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard had initially spoken about the youngster’s slow start in London following a timid outings against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool. He said:

“Kai has played various positions in career, as number nine, number eight and a number 10,He played lots off the right for Leverkusen and I have my own vision going forward.

“The key now is getting him fit. Kai, with the situation we are in we aren’t in a position where we can wait. We need to get him fit, and it’ll become very clear why he’s here.”

The manager also confirmed that latest signing goalkeeper Edouard Mendy would be announced tomorrow.

Dominant outing by Havertz and Chelsea after Liverpool debacle

Frank Lampard handed Thiago Silva his first appearance for the Blues after his free transfer from Paris Saint Germain. Ben Chilwell also marked his Chelsea debut with an appearance off the bench which was capped off with an assist to Oliver Giroud for Chelsea’s finalgoal of the evening.

Chelsea now face the winner of Leyton Orient and Tottenham Hotspur in the next round of the competition. They next face newly promoted West Brom away from home in two days time.
