John Cena, the 15-time WWE Champion recently spoke on how he dealt with the fear of heights during the latest episode of WWE Untold special on the WWE Network.
John Cena is popular for his strength and power inside the squared circle. During the interview, the former WWE United States Champion recalled his match with Edge and revealed some secrets.
He admitted that he is afraid of heights but he had to overcome the fear, in order to perform multiple high-risk spots when he locked horns with WWE Hall of Famer, Edge in a TLC match at Unforgiven pay-per-view in 2006.
John Cena spills the beans on overcoming the fear of heights
During the match, John Cena performed his signature, the Five Knuckle Shuffle on Edge but off the ladder. He admitted that he felt reluctant before doing the move because of his fear of heights but did it anyway.
He said, “I have a fear of heights. Once again, I only did what I knew I could do. And through the match, I knew every spot I did was hopefully a new take on a maneuver that fans have already seen 10s of 1000s of times before.”
John Cena continued, “Also, since it hurts every time you fall off a ladder, you get a gauge of what to expect. That helped me through the process.”
It’s not often that he performs the high-risk acrobatic maneuvers. He explained, “My philosophy on the contact nature of sports entertainment is that we’re in control. If you feel you can’t do something, you shouldn’t do it.”
The ending of the match saw John Cena hit the Attitude Adjustment on Edge from the ladder onto a stack of a couple of tables in the ring. He then retrieved the title belt to win his third WWE Championship title.
John Cena claims the ending of the match to be “unnecessary”. He had discussed with Edge and the later insisted to do the spot.
Edge reflected on the finish of the match as he said, “He had to get through a lot of nerves to do that. But he did it.”
He added, “I wanted to do the last spot because it was the only way to put an exclamation point on a great match.”
The bout between the two arch-enemies would always remain as one of the greatest TLC matches in the WWE history.
John Cena has recently starred in Fast and Furious 9, while Edge is sidelined with a tricep injury following his match with Randy Orton at Backlash.
