Clemson Tigers quarterback Trevor Lawrence may not want to join New York Jets, claims former fellow quarterback and New York Jets Hall of Famer Joe Namath.

Trevor Lawrence is one of the biggest names out of the American college football scene. Considered to be one of the best high school quarterback prospects of all time, the Clemson QB is garnering attention from many NFL teams for a pickup, including the Jets.

However, for Joe Namath, chances of landing the 21-year-old might be near impossible for ‘Gang Green’, as the veteran believes the poor performance of the Jets this season could push Lawrence for an NFL draft pickup elsewhere.

New York Jets are yet to see the face of victory in the current NFL season. Right now with 0 wins and eight defeats, they are at the bottom of AFC East. Speaking to Rich Cimini of ESPN, the former Jets stalwart pointed out the lacklustre performance of Jets in the 2020 NFL season can be a factor behind Lawrence preferring to join some other franchise.

“Anything could happen in this world, damn near anything — except for the Jets maybe making the playoffs this year. It’s happened before, so why would it shock anybody?” Namath said in the interview, “thinking back to the Manning family and Eli Manning and San Diego, there are some people that may not want to go [to a certain team] for whatever reason.”

“But If Trevor Lawrence is available, I think the upside is tremendous there. Also, I think the upside with Sam [Darnold] is positive, but you’re not going to keep both of them. You’re not going to take a quarterback No. 1 without getting a couple of high draft choices … for Sam. It depends on what the powers that be want to do,” the Jets legend added.

Joe Namath lauds Trevor Lawrence for his ‘terrific’ all-around performance

Although negating the potential of Lawrence coming to the MetLife stadium, Namath shed praise over the young QB for his marvellous finesse.

The 77-year-old went on, “He’s a winner. He’s determined. His size is terrific. His athleticism is terrific. His passing ability is terrific.”

“He shows certainly better athleticism than a lot of people give him credit for, whenever he gets an attitude that he has to go do something and take it out of the pocket. But guys that take it out of the pocket, they rarely last long,” concluded Namath.
