Last month, George Kambosos Jr made history. The undefeated Aussie professional boxer had become the IBF’s mandatory challenger to take on the former unified lightweight world champion Teofimo Lopez, a fight which most thought would end up as another successful title defence for Lopez. However, Kambosos pulled the biggest upset in boxing this year- defeating Lopez and taking home the WBA (Super), IBF and WBO belts. But “Ferocious” isn’t done yet- he wants to go at the best the division has to offer- Devin Haney, Gervonta Davis, Vasyl Lomachenko and Ryan Garcia.
We’re bringing the big fights here now: George Kambosos Jr wants his next fight in Australia
On 27th November, Kambosos Jr defeated Teofimo Lopez via split decision after a hard-fought 12 rounds at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, New York, clinching the unified lightweight championship as well as handing “The Takeover” his first professional career defeat.
Touching down in Land Down Under, Kambosos received a hero’s welcome from his supporters at the Sydney International Airport and now, plans to have his title defence on his home soil in April or May next year.
“As much as I had to go do it inside the ropes, my family and my friends and both my countries lifted me, especially in that round 10,” Kambosos said in an interview with Fox Sports AU.
“It’s a big moment for everyone that’s been around me, a big moment for Australia. This is huge. I had to go and really earn it. I had to go to the backyard [of my opponents] multiple times and to go and beat this guy in his prime and in his home town, no Australian fighter’s ever done that before. So these belts mean a lot and they mean a lot to the whole of our country,” the 28-year-old added.
For his next fight, Kambosos wants either Sydney or Melbourne to host the venue and on his radar, the Aussie pugilist has four of the best 135 has to offer- WBC champion Devin Haney, WBA’s “Regular” titleholder Gervonta Davis, former unified lightweight champ Vasyl Lomachenko and former WBC interim titlist Ryan Garcia.
“We’re bringing the big fights here now. I deserve it, I’ve earned that,” Kambosos went on, “I haven’t fought here since 2017 so a big fight (is coming) and we’re going to bring that to a massive stadium – 80,000 people. Haney, Davis, Lomachenko, Garcia, they’re all going to get it.” [H/T Boxing Scene]
