Gervonta Davis has just been elevated to the WBA’s “Super” champion status, and just afterwards, has been called out as an “email champion”.

Gervonta Davis gets promoted from WBA “Regular” status

Gervonta Davis, a three division champion, clinched the WBA’s “Regular” lightweight title against Mario Barrios back in June 2021, courtesy of an 11th round TKO. Since then, “Tank” has made three title defenses, defeating Isaac Cruz in December 2021, Rolando Romero in May 2022 and Héctor García in January 2023.

In his latest fight, which was against longtime grudge rival Ryan Garcia, Davis did not have his belt at stake as the bout took place at a catchweight of 136 lbs, in which Davis secured a 7th round KO.

In the meantime, the WBA “Super” 135-pound belt was with Devin Haney, who had won it from George Kambosos Jr in 2022 in becoming undisputed champion. However, Haney had vacated the belts in November 2023 before moving up to super lightweight.

The WBA has now confirmed that Davis will be the sole lightweight world champion of the sanctioning body. The 2-champion policy that the WBA follows has often met with criticism from the fans, and so with this announcement from the body, Davis was addressed as an “email champion” by some fans.

The slang “email champion” is aimed at someone who has not fought anyone to earn their latest crown. Earlier, it was Haney who was being called an email champion by the fans as he was promoted to WBC champion from interim status without any fights and now, Davis is being called the same for his promotion to the “Super” status, which WBA’s “Regular” champion can achieve after defeating the concurrent “Super” champion.

In the X.com post of Michael Benson, who shared the decision of the WBA, many called out Davis as “email champion”, including one user named @barackobussa. Davis, however, appeared to have gone through the profile of the one who called him the slang, and had a choice response.

Regarding a different post by @barackobussa about his nieces and nephews, Davis replied: “Nah, I have a better idea. let me take her to the fight..I’ll s**t her out after”
