Gervonta Davis, WBA’s “Regular” lightweight champion, has poured water over the building up speculations of a fight between him and undisputed super bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue.
Gervonta Davis points out weight class mismatch with Inoue
Naoya Inoue has been making headlines for his superb victory over Marlon Tapales on 26th January, which crowned him as the undisputed WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF super-bantamweight champion.
In the wake of the fight, rumors about a possible fight between Inoue and Davis started to gain pace. In the meantime, The Rize Podcast- the official podcast channel of Davis’s coaches, Calvin Ford and Kenny Ellis, shared a post on Instagram regarding a potential fight between the two.
“Would this be the fight of the century? King Kong vs Godzilla? USA vs Japan on American soil! How huge would this fight be? Who wins??” the Instagram handle of the podcast posted.
“Tank”, however, made it clear that he has no intention to fight Inoue, pointing out how their weight classes are very different, and also lashed out at the page for making the post.
“I’m not fighting him. He’s NO WHERE near my weight…idk why this page keep posting s**t like this”, wrote Davis.

Gervonta Davis vs. Naoya Inoue: Can it actually happen?
Without a doubt, a fight between Davis and Inoue would be massive, but realistically, Davis’ words hold true and the fight is nearly impossible due to the weight difference between the two pugilists. While Davis has become a star at 135 pounds, the Japanese fighter has his current focus on 118 and 122 pounds.
Who are Davis and Inoue’s next potential opponents?Â
“The Monster” closed the year with a brutal 10th round KO over Tapales that crowned him as the undisputed super bantamweight champion, and it is expected that he will defend his belts against Luis Nery next year.
On the other hand, Davis is yet to have any solid developments regarding his next fight. The American last fought in April and since then he has only been linked to Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz as a possible rival. While Davis has already ruled out Garcia on multiple occasions, other options are yet to surface.
