Gennadiy Golovkin is clueless why Canelo Alvarez holds grudge against him ahead of September trilogy

Gennadiy Golovkin (42-1-1, 37 KOs), the unified WBA (Super), IBF and WBO middleweight world champion has no idea why his longtime rival Canelo Alvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) is vexed at him ahead of their trilogy fight in September, but his senses tell him- the Dmitry Bivol defeat is the reason.

Perhaps Canelo needs to motivate himself after his loss: Gennadiy Golovkin

Having become undisputed at 168, Canelo made a jump back to Light Heavyweight and emerged as a favourite against WBA champion Dmitry Bivol. However, Bivol pulled off a major upset on May 7th, outboxing Canelo and winning the match via unanimous decision.

The loss came as a shocker for many boxing fans and pundits and especially for Canelo himself, and Golovkin believes the reason his longtime foe is holding anger towards him ahead of their trilogy is to divert his mind from the loss.

“I can’t speak for him. Perhaps he needs to motivate himself after his loss. To me, it’s not personal, and it’s just another fight,” Golovkin told Fight Hub TV, “There are pros and cons, but it’s hard for me to evaluate them right now because it’ll be my first time going to 168. I will train, and the fight will show.”

Canelo and Golovkin met for the first time in September 2017 and the fight ended in a split draw. The rematch, taking place after a year, saw Canelo clinching GGG’s WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight belts via majority decision, as well as handing the Kazakhstani pugilist his first career defeat.

The trilogy, one of the biggest boxing matches in the making, will take place on 17th September at the T-Mobile Arena and will see Canelo defending his WBA (Super), WBC, IBF and WBO super middleweight titles against Golovkin.

Set to make his super middleweight debut against Canelo, Golovkin revealed that he’s also willing to take on David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo at 168.

“I’m a boxer above everything, and if there’s an opportunity to unify belts, I will certainly consider that opportunity,” Golovkin went on, “If there’s an opportunity to meet those boxers [Benavidez & Charlo] in the ring, I will give very serious consideration.” [H/T Boxingnews24.com]
