WBA Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol (20-0, 11 KOs) has shocked the boxing world, getting the better of undisputed super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez (57–2–2, 39 KOs), the pound for pound king who was seemingly invincible, as the undefeated Russian dominated through the 12 rounds at the T-Mobile Arena in Paradise, Nevada on 7th May to defeat Canelo via unanimous decision.

The fight started with a more aggressive approach from Bivol while Canelo had a more composed approach. At first, the Mexican was finding it hard to break through the Russian’s defense, but Canelo broke through in the second round with a huge right hand. However, Bivol kept his defense at peak and in round 3, came through with clean combinations.

Bivol continued to tackle all of Canelo’s approaches with beautiful control of distance, while kept walking on his opponent with brilliant combinations. After three more rounds of failing to break through Bivol’s defense and eating his combos, blotches and minor swellings started to appear on Canelo’s face.

Bivol became more combative from round 8, with Canelo following up the same method in the ninth as the Mexican backed up his opponent with single shots followed by a good uppercut. Canelo displayed good bodywork and aversion to Bivol’s combos and finished the round with more body shots.

Bivol took control of the fight in the tenth once again, backstepping Canelo with impeccable combos while getting into defensive mode in the penultimate round to eat up Canelo’s jabs. The final round ended with more of Bivol’s impenetrable defense nullifying Canelo’s approaches.

After 12 rounds of domination over the pound for pound king, Dmitry Bivol earned his victory via unanimous decision, as all three judges scored 115-113, 115-113, 115-111 in favour of the Russian pugilist.
