Former unified heavyweight champion of the world Andy Ruiz Jr (34-2, 22 KOs) secured his first fight of 2021 against Chris Arreola in May. Even though he was supposed to face Charles Martin in October, but unfortunately, undergoing a knee surgery in August had him deemed unavailable until 2022. Now, fresh into the New Year, the Mexican is excited to return to the squared circle and has hinted at finalizing the date of his next fight very soon.

Andy Ruiz Jr may face Tyson Fury up next, but may not earn a shot at the WBC heavyweight title

Andy Ruiz Jr, who had defeated Anthony Joshua back in 2019 June and won the WBA, IBF and IBO heavyweight titles, recently expressed his wish to challenge the WBC titleholder, Tyson Fury, whom he recently called the best in the division, for the coveted green and gold belt.

However, while its unclear that Ruiz will earn a shot at a world title right now, Fury’s promoter Bob Arum has also pointed out that the Briton may not be defending his WBC belt in his next fight in the first place.

Arum however, had named Ruiz as one of the two potential fighters for Fury up next, the other one being Robert Helenius, Finnish pugilist who defeated Adam Kownacki in the undercard of Fury vs Wilder 3 on 9th October.

“Frank Warren and I are looking for another opponent to do Fury’s fight in Manchester or Las Vegas, depending on who the opponent is,” Arum revealed to iFL TV. “So we’re looking at Andy Ruiz as a possibility, he’s available. This big Finnish kid, who looked very good on the Fury vs Wilder 3 card, Helenius.”

Be it for the WBC title or not, facing Fury will surely be a massive payday for Ruiz. Nonetheless, the “Destroyer” revealed his excitement for his comeback to the ring this year as he tweeted about his next fight date is on the works.
