Andy Ruiz Jr and Deontay Wilder never crossed paths with each other while they were world champions and compete for the undisputed title. The Mexican had lost his WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titles to Anthony Joshua, while Wilder was dominated by Tyson Fury in their second encounter when the latter became the new WBC titlist. However, the former unified titleholder has recently expressed his desire to fight and defeat the ex-WBC heavyweight champ. Moreover, Ruiz believes Fury to be the best in the division at present.
Andy Ruiz Jr vs Deontay Wilder? “Would be amazing”, says Ruiz
Both Andy Ruiz Jr and Deontay Wilder come from Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions, and when asked about a potential matchup between the two heavyweights in the coming days on The Last Stand with Brian Custer, “Destroyer” nodded to the notion.
“Yes, I do, and I think that would be an amazing fight,” Ruiz asserted, “We’re both part of the same team, and it’s all business. I wouldn’t mind getting in the ring with him, and I feel I could beat him. We got to get it on.”
Since losing to Joshua back in December 2019, Ruiz went on a hiatus of almost a year and a half, before returning in May this year against Chris Arreola to mark a unanimous decision victory. On the other hand, Fury and Wilder contested for their much anticipated trilogy fight last month, with the ‘Gypsy King’ earning a KO in the 11th round.
“I thought that was an awesome fight,” Ruiz commented on Fury vs Wilder 3, “They were going back and forth, and I didn’t know who was going to win. Deontay, he has the heart of a lion. He doesn’t want to give up, and he kept coming. He kept getting up, falling down, and getting up. It wasn’t an amazing fight. Hats off to Tyson Fury. He did his thing.”
When asked about if Tyson Fury is the current best heavyweight fighter, Ruiz nodded, “I agree with that.” [H/T Boxing Scene]
