Terence Crawford has remained undefeated and one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world, but he has never been pressured like he would be against Errol Spence Jr when they lock horns next month, as this is what the latter’s trainer believes.
We want to chop Crawford down: Errol Spence Jr’s trainer
Crawford and Spence would lock horns on 29th July at the prestigious T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas for the undisputed crown at 170, with Crawford’s WBO title at the stake against Spence’s WBC, WBA (Super), and IBF belts. The fight is one of the most anticipated of this generation, with two of the greatest pugilists in the sport right now.
A month ahead of the undisputed clash, Spence’s trainer Derrick James insisted on Manouk Akopyan’s channel that they will be pushing Crawford to an unprecedented limit in the squared circle.
“It’s about fortitude. We’re going to see a fighter [Crawford] that has never been pushed before in a fight,” said James.
Both fighters are undefeated and are among the best today, Spence with the WBC, WBA (Super), and IBF titles in his possession, and Crawford with the WBO belt, which they will unify. But James made it clear that the key element in the fight will be to demolish the WBO champion.
“We want to chop him down. That’s the key element. Keep breaking him down, and that’s all he’s going to do,” the trainer added.
Crawford recently said that while he doesn’t go in the ring looking for a KO, a knockout over Spence would be “icing on the cake“. On the other hand, when questioned about the knockout power of Crawford, James said that Spence’s resume speaks for itself.
“Who has he fought? What are you talking about? Who are those guys?” said James about preparing Spence for Crawford’s power. “Everybody can punch. He beat the guy from Australia [Jeff Horn] and beat Benavidez Jr. Come on, man.”
Then, he made it clear that maintaining focus will be decisive in winning this fight.
“Just be the best version of himself and go out there and stay focused,” James concluded. [H/T Boxing News 24]
