Vadim Kornilov, WBA Light Heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol’s manager, has stated that the negotiations for Bivol to face Jaime Munguía continue and they hope to have the two fights lock horns in June this year.

The backup for Munguía in June is Beterbiev or Canelo in September says Dmitry Bivol’s manager

A few weeks ago, Jaime Munguía’s promoter Fernando Beltrán assured that negotiations with Bivol had fallen through and that the fighter they wanted for Munguía was Gennady Golovkin. Erik Morales later commented that the fight fell apart only three days after confirmation.

However, Vadim Kornilov has come forward about the fight, and speaking to ID Boxing in a recent interview, Bivol’s manager stated that the fight is under negotiations and is being targeted for June.

“We meet here daily and talk (with people from Matchroom Boxing), trying to come up with something and make this work,” said Kornilov. “Obviously Munguía is still in talks and hopefully we can resolve that and that it can be done in June. But for us it’s more like an intermission, asking why Munguía is, why he is someone else. If you guys tell me which fighter I should fight, we’ve never run away from fighting someone, but now we’re on this side of the street and it seems like it’s the only fight that makes sense.”

Dmitry Bivol is in training camp waiting to meet his next rival. His priority is to face Artur Beterbiev for the unification of the light heavyweight belts, but there are different impediments to that clash taking place.

“If it doesn’t work, there are some backup options and there is the idea of going until September, which will be Beterbiev and Canelo,” Kornilov further stated. “Dmitry is telling me that he wants the unification fights that now would be Beterbiev or Canelo. I hope we will have news by the end of this week. I hope that what Canelo has said, if it’s an option, I hope there’s seriousness in that. I think he has the character, he has shown it in his career and he doesn’t want that loss on his record and his head, so I think he wants it. But I am very skeptical of what the rest of the team wants, I don’t see why they would want to fight Bivol again.”
