Tuesday saw the New York Giants agree to a four-year contract with quarterback Daniel Jones and place the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley following days of heated, last-minute talks.

Jones’ agreement was revealed by the Giants on Tuesday night. The arrangement was made with his agents just before the franchise tag deadline.

The Giants applied their franchise tag to running back Saquon Barkley even though Jones was still under contract.

We had productive conversations with Daniel and his representatives over the course of the past week or so,” general manager Joe Schoen said. “We are all pleased that we were able to come to an agreement prior to today’s deadline. This gives us a greater ability to continue to build our roster.”

I said after the season I love this place,” said Jones, who turns 26 in May. “I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I want to be here. I have great respect for this organization, the (owners), my coaches and teammates. I am happy we were able to come to an agreement.”

As the Giants are not the only team Barkley can contract with, his tag is nonexclusive. In the event that New York chose not to match any team’s offer, it would still be given two first-round draught picks.

The NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2018 and the No. 2 overall draught pick would make just over $10 million playing under the franchise tag.

The transactions followed Jones’ outstanding season, which saw him lead the franchise to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

Before the start of the previous campaign, the Giants declined to exercise Jones’ rookie contract’s fifth-year option. On March 15, he was slated to become an unrestricted free agent.

Jones, who was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2019 draught, had a breakout year and helped New York to a 9-7-1 record. Jones passed for 3,205 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions while working with new coach Brian Daboll. By rushing for a QB franchise record 708 yards and seven touchdowns, he gave the offence a new dimension.

The Giants defeated Minnesota in the NFC postseason wild-card round, recording their first winning season since 2016. They were humiliated by the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round. The Giants were able to tag Barkley, who was also an unrestricted free agent, after signing Jones. Barkley ran for 1,312 yards and 10 touchdowns in his finest and healthiest season since 2018. Moreover, he hauled in 57 passes for 338 yards.

The Giants have about $46 million in cap space at the beginning of the summer. Long snapper Casey Kreiter, offensive lineman Jon Feliciano and Nick Gates, receivers Darius Slayton and Richie James, and safety Julian Love, who leads the team in tackles, are also anticipated to become unrestricted free agents.
