CLARK NEEDED EIGHT POINTS TO BREAK THE PREVIOUS RECORD

Before the match against Michigan, Iowa’s Clark needed seven points to reach the previous record held by Kelsey Plum. She reached the much-anticipated score quite easily. She pulled up for an easy shot to become the new record holder. Her first eight points, leading to the record, were also the first eight points Iowa scored in the match.

Michigan gained possession after the historic net, and the match continued after Clark decided not to halt the flow of the encounter. But the audience were, expectedly, in the mood to celebrate the record. When Iowa gained possession of the match, they had to call a timeout to let the audience celebrate Clark’s tremendous achievement.

Clark went on to score 23 points in the first quarter itself. When the match ended, she had scored a career-high 49 points. Iowa defeated Michigan 106-89.

She may very well have another record on her wishlist. After scoring the most number of points as a female basketball player, she may now look to be the all-time leading scorer of NCAA, irrespective of gender. She only trails two men at this point – Antoine Davis, and the highest scorer, Pete Maravich. Clark is presently at 3,569 points, David at 3,664, and “Pistol” Maravich at 3,667.

ACCOLADES HAVE RAINED DOWN UPON HER

Clark’s journey began in West Des Moines, Iowa, where she honed her skills on the court from a young age. Her talent quickly blossomed, leading her to become a McDonald’s All-American and the fourth-ranked recruit in her class. Arriving at Iowa in 2020, she immediately made her mark, leading the nation in scoring as a freshman and shattering numerous school records. Her unique blend of scoring and facilitating makes her a nightmare matchup for opposing defenses.

Accolades have rained down upon Clark, including two-time National Player of the Year honors, three-time First-Team All-American selections, and the prestigious Nancy Lieberman Award, recognizing the nation’s best point guard. Beyond individual recognition, she led the Hawkeyes to the Sweet Sixteen in 2021 and the Elite Eight in 2023, raising the program’s national profile in the process.
