Arsenal shunt out Liverpool on penalties to win the FA Community Shield

Arsenal secured the FA Community Shield after edging out Liverpool on penalties. After leading for the majority of the encounter courtesy of a stunning strike by Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Arsenal conceded towards the end of the game to stretch the game to penalties in order to crown the winner.

Mikel Arteta’s side began on a promising note in Wembley while the Premier League champions looked rusty at best. Twelve minutes into the game, Arsenal’s attack which was played out from the back by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez resulted in a goal.

Sadio Mane came closest for Liverpool, but the winger’s effort was met with a crucial intervention by Martinez. Youngster Neco Williams was subbed off for Takumi Minamino in the second half, and the change worked for the Merseyside team.

The former Red Bull Salzburg player thumped his effort into the corner after the ball had deflected off Cedric. The tie was all square with twenty minutes left on the clock. While Liverpool dictated the play towards the end, time ran out which forced the game into penalties.

Arsenal execute perfection from the spot to secure shield

Mohammad Salah opened the scoring for Liverpool in the shootout while Reiss Nelson sent Alisson down the wrong way to level things up.

With the penalty score levelled at 2-2, youngster Rhian Brewster, who came on in the last minute of the game, missed from the spot. The striker’s effort rattled the crossbar marking the first miss.

Arsenal saved the penalty veterans for last as David Luiz and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang slotted their efforts with ease to secure a monumental win at Wembley yet again.
