US figure skater Alysa Liu calls it quits at 16 years of age: I’m finally done with my goals

Alysa Liu, the two time United States national champion and world championship bronze medallist figure skater has decided to retire from the sport at just 16 years of age, citing that she has achieved all of her goals in skating.

Having won the U.S. Figure Skating Championship back to back in 2019 as well as 2020, Alysa Liu clinched bronze at this year’s Figure Skating World Championships which took place in Montpellier, France from 21st to 27th March, followed by a seventh place finish on her Olympic debut in Beijing back in February.

On Sunday, the teenager took to Instagram to announce her retirement, stating that she is satisfied and has achieved the goals she targeted in her skating career and also added that she will focus more on spending time with family and friends, as well as focusing on her education.

“Heyyyyy so I’m here to announce that I am retiring from skating🤭🤭 I started skating when I was 5 so that’s about 11 years on the ice and it’s been an insane 11 years. a lot of good and a lot of bad but yk that’s just how it is. I’ve made so many friends, and so so sooo many good memories that I’ll have for the rest of my life. I honestly never thought I would’ve accomplished as much as I did LMAOO I’m so happy,” Liu wrote on Instagram.

“I feel so satisfied with how my skating career has gone. now that I’m finally done with my goals in skating I’m going to be moving on with my life. rn I’m probably just gonna spend all my spare time with my family and friends; and i’m also going to study ykwim. but fr this skating thing has taught me a lot more about life than I anticipated. I’m really glad I skated,” her post added.

Last month, just days before the world championships, Liu along with her father Arthur Liu, who is an ex-political refugee, were the targets of a Chinese spy operation, alleged by the Justice Department.

Mr. Liu had informed AP that the FBI had contacted him in October last year about the spy case, during his daughter’s Winter Olympics preparations. “We believed Alysa had a very good chance of making the Olympic team and truly were very scared,” Liu said last month.
