Alberto Puello, the undefeated Dominican Republic boxer and the reigning WBA junior welterweight champion has failed his dope test and as a result, his upcoming bout against Rolando “Rolly” Romero next month has been called off.
The report was made by Boxingscene.com late Wednesday. Later, Jake Donovan stated on Twitter that Puello tested positive for the substance called Clomiphene, but still has the right to have his B-sample tested.
Was told banned substance in question is clomiphene. Puello has the right to have B-sample tested … or he can just provide the WBA with a 270-page explanation on why he should be cleared. https://t.co/tDfgWKwym0

All that being said, Puello is set to be stripped of his world championship, as well as the dismissal of the Romero fight headlining a SHOWTIME event on May 13th at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, which would have been his maiden title defense. However, Romero will have Ismael Barroso as his new rival, in a fight for Puello’s vacant WBA belt.
Barroso has a good record, having marked victory 24 times, of which 22 were via knockout and he has only lost three fights. On the other hand, Romero holds a record of 14 wins and only one loss. His only professional defeat so far was against Gervonta Davis back in May 2022.
