Supporters accuse Jon Heyman of ruining the no-hitter attempt

Must read

There still has not been a no-hitter in the 2025 MLB season, and some fans think that Jon Heyman was to blame for jinxing the closest attempt yet.

Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez hurled eight innings of no-hit ball to start off Friday’s game against the San Diego Padres. Martinez had an 8-0 lead entering the ninth inning at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio and looked to have an excellent shot at finishing off the no-no with 8-9-1 due up for the Padres.

That is when the New York Post reporter Jon Heyman posted about the no-hit bid to X. Heyman commented about the Reds-Padres game and noted that “in a few minutes, Nick Martinez will try to finish his no-hit bid.”

Unfortunately for Martinez, the baseball gods appear to have heard Heyman. Martinez promptly walked the first batter he faced (Trenton Brooks) and then gave up a double to pinch-hitter Elias Diaz to end the shot at history.

As such, fans on X quickly laid the blame on Heyman for jinxing Martinez.

It is a widely-accepted superstition in baseball not to mention the words “no-hit bid” or “no-hitter” when a pitcher is working on one, especially when he is so close to the end. But apparently Heyman has not heard of the superstition.

Instead, Reds reliever Taylor Rogers completed the 8-1 triumph for the Reds (after allowing Brooks to score on a bases-loaded walk to Bryce Johnson), forcing Martinez to settle for his fifth victory of the season. Regarding Heyman, this is by no means the first time he has been publicly humiliated due to a social media post.
