WBC interim champion of the world Ryan Garcia’s next opponent has been decided, as latest reports suggest that the young American boxing sensation will be squaring off against three-division titleholder Javier Fortuna in July and the fight is targeted for either in Los Angeles or Las Vegas.
The claim was first made by Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, who revealed that both fighters have nodded to square off in July and its going to be on DAZN. However, the deal avoids purse bid.
Ever since he gained WBC’s interim status after finishing off Luke Campbell in the seventh round back on 2nd January, Ryan Garcia has been finicky on who he should face off next.
On one hand, the youngster was pushing for a “dream” matchup with eight division champion and Filipino boxing virtuoso Manny Pacquiao and on the other hand, he was throwing “2-round” challenge to WBA (Regular) lightweight and the WBA (Super) super featherweight titleholder Gervonta “Tank” Davis.
Amidst all that, speculations were also on the rise about a potential fight against Devin Haney, WBC’s champion at 135, as Garcia is the sanctioning body’s interim champion. As things currently progress, its Javier Fortuna whom the 22-year-old will be stepping inside the ring, six months after his first fight of this year.
