WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio is now set to return to in-ring action according to Dave Meltzer. Mysterio had been sidelined due to a knee injury that required surgery following his loss of the United States Championship to Logan Paul at WWE Crown Jewel, back in November. Mysterio’s departure from WWE television was scripted, with Santos Escobar turning heel and attacking him, accusing Mysterio of siding with Carlito.

As of late January, Mysterio was approximately four weeks into his recovery and had initially aimed for a return at the Royal Rumble, though that did not materialize. Dave Meltzer, in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, has now provided an update on Mysterio’s status, indicating that the veteran wrestler is closing in on his in-ring return and may be ready to compete in a few weeks. Meltzer notes that Mysterio had hoped for a late January return but is still on track to make a comeback soon.
Rey Mysterio to face a former LWO member upon return?
The storyline leading to Rey Mysterio’s hiatus involved the heel turn of Santos Escobar, and it is expected that Mysterio will resume this storyline upon his return to WWE television. Santos Escobar, who had been allied with Mysterio in the Latino World Order (LWO) throughout 2023, betrayed Mysterio after a match between fellow LWO member Carlito and Bobby Lashley. The rift began when Carlito questioned Escobar’s involvement in Mysterio’s loss of the United States Championship to Logan Paul at Crown Jewel.
Escobar angrily left the ring, later hesitating to aid Carlito during a post-match assault by Lashley and the Street Profits. During the confrontation, Escobar and Rey Mysterio got physical with each other, with Mysterio attempting reconciliation. However, Escobar unexpectedly attacked Mysterio, crushing his leg with the ring steps. The LWO members, including Zelina Vega, rushed to Rey’s aid, rejecting Escobar’s claims that Mysterio was at fault.
