The Pittsburgh Pirates faced a tough series against the Toronto Blue Jays, ultimately losing the three-game set on the road. However, in the aftermath of this defeat, the Pirates made a significant move by calling up catcher Henry Davis from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Henry Davis: A Top Prospect
Henry Davis was the first overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft, and his arrival in the big leagues has been highly anticipated. At the start of the 2024 season, Davis was expected to play a role with the Pirates. Unfortunately, he struggled in the MLB, hitting just .162 with 29 strikeouts in 83 at-bats. As a result, the Pirates sent him down to Triple-A Indianapolis in May to work on his game.
Triple-A Success
While in Triple-A, Davis caught fire with the bat. In 81 at-bats, he posted impressive numbers: a .296 batting average, seven home runs, 17 RBIs, and an outstanding 1.078 OPS. His performance in the minors has given the Pirates hope that he can provide an offensive spark at the major league level.

The Pirates signed Yasmani Grandal in the offseason and acquired Joey Bart via trade from the San Francisco Giants. However, Bart recently landed on the Injured List, leaving a void at the catcher position. Grandal has also struggled offensively, hitting just .179 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. With Bart out, the Pirates are searching for more production from their catchers.
As the Pirates return home for a six-game homestand against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Minnesota Twins, all eyes will be on Henry Davis. If he performs well, he could secure the starting role behind the plate and provide the offensive boost the team needs.
