The 2024 Formula 1 season has been a thrilling battle among three contenders for the Constructors’ Championship: Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren. Unlike the previous year, where one team dominated the entire campaign, this season has seen fierce competition at the front of the grid.

McLaren, powered by a Mercedes engine, has made significant strides in 2024. With five podium finishes and a race win, they have showcased their competitiveness. In contrast, the Mercedes factory team has yet to secure a spot on the rostrum. Despite McLaren’s progress, the Brackley-based team still faces challenges in closing the gap completely to the front.

“I hope we can get closer as well, I think they [McLaren] also have just shown that you can close the gap and you can catch up if the job’s done right. It’s inspired us all to get on it.”

Mercedes acknowledges that their engine is not the issue. The power unit developed at Brixworth remains top-notch, with impressive performance and reliability. Buyers of Mercedes engines can trust the quality they receive. However, the team recognizes that their car’s overall performance has room for improvement.

Lewis Hamilton, who began his Formula 1 journey with McLaren in 2007, has a special connection to the team. He won multiple races and a Drivers’ World Championship for McLaren in 2008 before moving to Mercedes in 2012. Seeing McLaren back at the sharp end of the grid warms Hamilton’s heart, as they gave him his break in the sport.

Hamilton praises McLaren’s current drivers. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are doing an excellent job. Norris, in particular, has impressed, although Piastri has faced some bad luck in recent races. Their progress inspires everyone, including Hamilton, who hopes to see McLaren continue their upward trajectory.

Mercedes takes inspiration from McLaren’s resurgence. Witnessing their customer team perform well motivates the factory team to improve. Mercedes aims to close the gap and return to a position where they can consistently fight for wins and titles.
