Luke Humphries beats teenage sensation to become the Darts World Champion

Luke Humphries claimed the throne to the top of the Darts world by winning the World Darts Championship 2024 over 16-year-old Luke Littler, who is deemed to have a great future by darts enthusiasts.

Luke Humphries made a thrilling comeback over the prodigy who was well on his way to making history by becoming the youngest world champion. Humphries was down 2-4 at a point in time. At a point where most players would have sweaty palms, weak knees, and heavy arms, Humphries pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in the sport as he won 5 back-to-back sets to end the final score 7-4.

Luke Humphries makes comeback

Most of the crowd voiced their support for the prodigy who started the tournament ranked over 150 but dominated his opponents in one of the toughest eras of the sport to reach the final. With minimal support behind his back and his history of panic attacks and anxiety pushing him to miss big at most of the previous tournaments, Luke Humphries showed resilience, true grit, and composure beyond measure.

Luke Humphries shows resilience throughout tournament

It was not a smooth journey for Humphries throughout the tournament. Going to the deciding set twice in the earlier stages, he also had to move past Joe Cullen in the Round of 16 via sudden death deciding set. In the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, Humphries showed his abilities as the number 3 ranked player in the world with wins over Dave Chisnall and Scott Williams.

Humphries hit 23 maximums and averaged 103.67 in the final, compared to Littler’s 13 180s and 101.13 average.

Luke Humphries wins the Darts World Championship 2024

The current world champion and number 1, Luke Humphries failed to control his emotions as he teared up in joy. In his interview with Sky Sports, he said “I could not put into words how great this feels,” He is joyous of his victory as he comments “That double eight [to win], my hands were shaking like mad and it just fell in for me. I’m world champion and world number one and I can’t ask for more.”

Luke Humphries hails Luke Littler as the future of the Darts world as he expressed his feelings when he said “In the back of my mind throughout today, I was thinking ‘get this one now because he’s going to dominate world darts soon’. He’s an incredible player. When I was on the brink of winning there, he was relentless.”

A top-notch tournament, with multiple close matches and thorough entertainment, comes to an end. A fairytale tournament ends for Luke Littler and a massively deserved victory for Luke Humphries. It elated the whole darts community with how the era of darts is enrolling.
