Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick had no sympathy for any fans or reporters who actually thought LeBron James was hanging up his sneakers.
King James turned heads on Monday when he released a teaser for what was called “The Second Decision” on his social media platforms. The format looked like a modern-day recreation of his infamous 2010 “Decision” segment on ESPN, which served as his platform to announce his decision to sign with the Miami Heat.
At the close of the season, some fans questioned if LeBron was going to declare his retirement. After the 10-second footage was released, the price of tickets for the Lakers’ season-ending game instantly increased by more than 500%. It all turned out to be a sophisticated marketing campaign for the Hennessy brand of cognac.
Reporters questioned Redick on Tuesday about whether he was getting texts asking about James’ retirement plans. The head coach of the Lakers was shocked to learn that the “Second Decision” was actually purchased as a deal for endorsements.
“You guys are idiots,” Redick told reporters. “We all knew it was an ad, right? … I think most people that texted me [about LeBron’s ‘Second Decision’] are also aware that it was probably an ad. Nobody was freaking out.”
James’ post was spotted by the majority of fans as a prelude to a sponsored advertisement. Internet detectives just misguessed which billion-dollar company was responsible.
Many of James’ fans are anxious about when he will ultimately decide to retire as he begins an unprecedented 23rd season in the NBA. The fact that James keeps teasing fans about his retirement whenever he gets the chance doesn’t help.
