This news comes as no surprise, as the Patriots have been searching for a long-term solution at quarterback ever since the departure of the legendary Tom Brady. But how does McCarthy stack up against Brady’s college career, and is he the right fit for the Patriots’ system?

J.J. McCarthy’s Meteoric Rise at Michigan

J.J. arrived at the University of Michigan in 2021 as a highly-touted recruit. He spent his freshman year as a backup to Cade McNamara, but in 2022, he took over the starting role and led the Wolverines to a College Football Playoff National Championship victory.

McCarthy’s college stats are impressive: in his starting year, he threw for 3,471 yards, 34 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions, while also rushing for 275 yards and 5 touchdowns. He’s known for his strong arm, athleticism, and leadership qualities. However, it’s important to note that McCarthy only has one year of significant starting experience under his belt.

Tom Brady’s Storied College Career

Tom Brady’s college career at the University of Michigan was far less flashy than McCarthy’s. Brady was drafted in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft, largely considered a project quarterback. While he was a four-year starter for the Wolverines, his stats were not overly impressive. He finished college with 11,171 passing yards, 72 touchdowns, and 36 interceptions.

However, his intelligence, work ethic, and leadership qualities set Brady apart. He was known for his meticulous preparation and ability to elevate his teammates’ play.

Who Had the Better College Career?

Statistically, J.J. had the more impressive college career. However, comparing Brady’s college stats to those of modern quarterbacks is a bit like comparing apples to oranges. The passing game has evolved significantly since Brady’s time, with a greater emphasis on spread offenses and wide-open passing schemes.
