The New York Knicks’ postseason journey was filled with highs and lows, but one player who consistently stood out was point guard Jalen Brunson. As the Knicks battled their way through the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Indiana Pacers, Brunson’s competitive fire and accountability shone brightly. In a recent interview on the “Roommates Show” podcast with teammate Josh Hart, Brunson opened up about what truly irked him during the series.
The Narrative That Pissed Jalen Brunson Off
Jalen Brunson expressed frustration with a particular narrative that emerged whenever the Knicks faced setbacks. He said, “The one thing I hated the most, even though we were playing well… whenever we lost, everyone was like ‘they’re tired’ or ‘they’re injured’… that pissed me off.” He firmly believed that the team had opportunities to win the series and didn’t capitalize on them. Specifically, the Knicks had a chance to go up 3-0 but failed to do so.
Accountability and Grit
What sets Jalen Brunson apart is his unwavering accountability. While injuries did impact the Knicks—OG Anunoby, Josh Hart, Mitch Robinson, and Bojan Bogdanovic were all dealing with health issues—the point guard refused to use them as excuses. Even Julius Randle’s season-ending shoulder injury didn’t deter Brunson’s mindset. He recognized that every team faces adversity and absences, but he refused to let that narrative define their performance.

In Game 7 against the Pacers, the Knicks were already gasping for breath. Brunson himself suffered a left-hand fracture and had to exit the contest in the third quarter. Despite the odds, New York had a prime opportunity to build a commanding 3-0 lead earlier in the series. Unfortunately, they couldn’t capitalize, and the Pacers roared back to secure the victory. Brunson’s frustration stemmed from the belief that they could have done better, injuries notwithstanding.
A Beacon for the Knicks
Jalen Brunson’s competitive fire and refusal to make excuses have made him a beacon for the Knicks. Although he hasn’t led them to the mountaintop yet, his impact on the team and the city is undeniable. As the face of the franchise, he continues to make the Knicks nationally interesting and relevant. Whether it’s putting the team on his back or holding everyone accountable, Brunson embodies the spirit of New York basketball.
