In the Miami Grand Prix, George Russell experienced a notable performance deficit compared to his Mercedes teammate, Lewis Hamilton. This was unexpected, as Russell’s race pace had been strong throughout the season. However, in this particular race, he was nowhere near Hamilton’s level.
George Russell: I had a good start, and then Checo went off. It was a tough day for us. We had no pace at all. We need to check the car, something was not right. We had no pace at all. My race pace is usually strong, but Lewis was stronger today, I had no pace.

As per the recent post of ‘Junaid #JB17’, ‘George Russell: I had a good start, and then Checo went off. It was a tough day for us. We had no pace at all. We need to check the car, something was not right. We had no pace at all. My race pace is usually strong, but Lewis was stronger today, I had no pace.”
Russell finished in eighth place, which was disappointing considering his usual competitive performance. He even trailed behind AlphaTauri’s Yuki Tsunoda. It marked the first time this season that Hamilton outperformed him, securing an 18-second advantage at the checkered flag.
Russell believes that Mercedes may have “overcompensated” with this year’s car in search of a breakthrough within the current Formula 1 rules era. The team made several changes over the winter to move closer to the front, but the results haven’t materialized as expected.
Despite bringing upgrades to the Miami GP, both Russell and Lewis Hamilton were knocked out in the second part of Sprint Qualifying and failed to score points in the Sprint race. Their performance in Saturday’s Qualifying improved, but they were still more than eight tenths adrift of pole-sitter Max Verstappen.
