After walking off from Mercedes, the 7x F1 World Champion will join Ferrari for the 2025 season creating a void in the Mercedes garage. Who will replace Lewis Hamilton? The question has become a hot topic for the F1 community and why not Mercedes will have options like double World Champion Fernando Alonso, Mercedes junior Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and Sunday’s Australian GP winner Carlos Sainz.

Toto Wolff, the team principal of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team, addressed the speculation surrounding Carlos Sainz potentially joining Mercedes. In Australia, Wolff acknowledged that Sainz, now a three-time Grand Prix winner, is indeed an option for the team in 2025.

“To clear up any confusion, Toto said earlier in the week that “some of the really good guys are about to sign for some of the other teams.” In the post race show I said I believed that was likely to be Carlos Sainz. I did not say Toto was about to sign Carlos for Mercedes.”

What did Toto Wolf say in Australia?

Carlos Sainz’s 2024 season has been a dominant one as he first took the podium in Bahrain and then missed Saudi Arabia due to appendix surgery. However, after his recovery, the Spaniard made a strong comeback and clinched a victory in Australia which further solidified his contentment for the seat in Mercedes in F1. After the race, Toto Wolf also mentioned Carlos Sainz’s name in his wishlist which he shared after the race.

“The ones that are available or that could be interesting for us, they all have arguments in favour of them,” Wolff said in Australia. “Be it the very young ones, be very mature ones in the best years. Or Carlos. It’s a difficult choice because there is no real… it’s not like there is a criteria for one and everything points to the other.”
