After seeing David Benavidez’s victory over Caleb Plant last Saturday night, Deontay Wilder expressed his appreciation to both fighters and with what he saw, the former WBC heavyweight champion believes Benavidez is capable of beating Canelo Alvarez.
“It’s going to be a tough fight for Canelo (with Benavidez),” Wilder said in an interview with AKHi TV. “I’m going with Benavidez on that one. Benavidez is very big for Canelo, he is very tough, he is powerful, and he likes to go up front.”
On 25th March, Benavidez and Plant locked horns at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, with the former world champion present in the venue to watch the fight. Benavidez retained his interim WBC super middleweight belt with a unanimous decision win over Plant, and “the Bronze Bomber” said he wasn’t surprised with the way Benavidez defeated Plant.
“I wasn’t surprised, it was just as I predicted,” Wilder went on, “I think David is very big, and I thought he could win a very scary shot.”
Deontay Wilder appreciated both Benavidez and Plant
While Deontay Wilder took his time to express his appreciation to both pugilists, he had words of encouragement for Caleb Plant.
“Caleb put up a good fight and he’s going to be able to come back to the top,” Wilder went on, “at the end of the day, it was an awesome fight, and I don’t see losers in this fight, only winners. My respects to both of you. Caleb is coming back, he’s a warrior, he’s going to know how to come back stronger.”
“I think Caleb did a great job, he has nothing to be ashamed of in this fight,” Wilder added. “I don’t see losers in this fight. Both fighters will advance from this point. I don’t think Caleb Plant has done anything wrong with this fight from a business standpoint, his career standpoint. He showed a big heart. Thanks to Caleb, thanks to David for giving the boxing world a great fight.”
