Deontay Wilder vs Andy Ruiz Jr “the most interesting non-title heavyweight fight”, says WBC President

Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr, two of the biggest names in the history of boxing and former world heavyweight titleholders, are currently without a belt around their waist. However, seeing the two elites together in the squared circle will be nothing short of astonishing, as none other than the World Boxing Council President Mauricio Sulaiman himself believes the bout will be the most interesting non-title fight in the division.

The former WBC heavyweight champion who held the title for five years and across ten title defenses, Deontay Wilder suffered two back to back losses against Tyson Fury, first in February last year, followed by this year in October when the two had their much-anticipated trilogy fight.

On the other hand, Andy Ruiz Jr had shocked the world in June 2019 when he defeated Anthony Joshua for the unified heavyweight championship but lost it in the rematch six months later in December. However, the Mexican bounced back into winning ways after securing a unanimous decision victory over Chris Arreola in May this year.

Deontay Wilder vs Andy Ruiz Jr would be wonderful: Sulaiman wants the fight in Mexico

Both Wilder and Ruiz, who are promoted by Premier Boxing Champions, have expressed their desire to square off against each other in future, and with Fernando Beltran of Zanfer Promotions eager to feature Ruiz in the headline of a big event in Mexico City, pitting the “Bronze Bomber” up against “Destroyer” will be a no-brainer.

On the same notion, WBC prez Mauricio Sulaiman recently expressed that the fight is the most exhilarating as it can get without any heavyweight titles up for grabs.

“[Wilder vs Ruiz] would be wonderful, and it is consistent with what the plans are for Mexico City [to secure big boxing events],” Sulaiman said, “We have been looking to return a great event to our capital. There have always been great fights [in Mexico City], but we have had many years without having a great event in Mexico City and yes indeed, Andy Ruiz, [a fight against Wilder] would be wonderful.”

“The Wilder-Ruiz fight is perhaps the most interesting non-title fight right now [at heavyweight]. Wilder is an explosive boxer, Andy Ruiz is a Mexican fighter, having achieved one of the great upsets in the history of heavyweight boxing and the great traction he has with Mexican fans is great, I would love to see him here in Mexico,” the WBC prez added.
