Reigning WBO welterweight champion of the world Terence Crawford is just days away from making his fifth title defence against former WBC welterweight titleholder Shawn Porter and will be returning to the squared circle after a hiatus of one year. Porter, a former WBC welterweight champion, will not be taking his shot at another world title lightly and ‘Bud’ Crawford is no easy opponent. However, Porter can surely take notes of the strategy revealed by David Benavidez, if he was the one facing Crawford up next.
“Lof of pressure and body shots” is David Benavidez’s strategy to overpower Terence Crawford
While sharing his prediction about the bout to Fighthype in a recent interview, Benavidez put Crawford ahead but did not rule out Porter completely, as well as shared some tips that ‘Showtime’ should implement inside the ring on 20th November at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Paradise, Nevada.
“I think Crawford is going to get him,” said Benavidez, “It’s not going to be an easy fight because Porter is a tough, rugged fighter, but I think Crawford uses the ring really good, and his IQ is really good. We’ll see what happens. You can’t count Porter out because when you count him out, he does better than you expect, like you see with Keith Thurman, Errol Spence, and Ugas. So it’s definitely going to be a good fight, but I’ve got Crawford.”
While it won’t be easy for Porter to catch the undefeated WBO titlist off guard, Benavidez brought up the example of Egidijus Kavaliauskas aka ‘Mean Machine’ who challenged Crawford back in 2019 and was quite overpowering at times.
“He’s just got to be himself times ten,” Benavidez went on, “He can’t let Crawford box at all, and he’s got to back him into the ring. Like I said, he’s got a good chance he wins. You see Mean Machine, and he was using that [pressure], and he kind of rocked Crawford.”
To get the better of a counter puncher like Crawford, Benavidez said he would utilize pressure added with body shots, as well as loads of catch and shoot, even though admitting that its ‘easier said than done’ considering its Crawford.
“A lot of pressure and a lot of body shots. A lot of catch and shoot. Sometimes you throw stuff to make him throw something to counter, and then you counter the counter. It’s harder than it sounds. You’ve really got to be on point with everything. But I think the pressure and the body shots,” Benavidez added. [H/T BoxingNews24]
