After failing two drug tests in 2022, British boxing star Nigel Benn said his son Conor Benn spent nearly £1 million to establish his innocence.

Conor’s October 2022 grudge match against Chris Eubank Jr. was canceled during fight week when the former tested positive for the illegal drug clomifene.

Although Benn Jr. gave up his British boxing license, he maintained that he had done nothing improper. Nigel, a former two-weight world champion, has now disclosed the amount of money Conor had to pay to have his doping suspension removed in November, more than two years after his positive tests.

Nigel spoke with Vision4Sport, where premium tickets for the fight are available for purchase on their website, and said: ‘It has been very challenging. Watching your young boy, who is innocent, who spent nearly a million pounds fighting a case.

‘It is not a guilty man. That is someone who is saying, “You know what, whatever it takes.” At that time, he was making no money. His money got whittled right down. But he was sending the calls. He knew he was innocent.

‘Anyone who saw him, even when he went to Nevada, they said, “Yeah, alright, we see the case. Not guilty.” But the British Boxing Board of Control… well, I am not going to go there. I will just say that is my opinion, but I do not want to open old wounds.

‘We got through it and have been victorious on all points in the Free Judgments campaign. The panel said Conor Benn was not guilty. So, we are happy about that and now we are moving on to bigger and better things.’

Conor will eventually take on Eubank Jr. at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on April 26 after being cleared to box once more.

After extensive negotiations, the two came to an arrangement last month, although Nigel has disputed that money was ever a problem, even though his son has suffered greatly financially in recent years.

‘I will speak for myself – Conor did not care (about the money),’ Nigel said. ‘He did not care who came in the ring first or whose name was said first. He just wanted to get the fight done.

‘He is not worried about that childish stuff. He just wanted to get in there and fight. As for the financial side, I do not know what the fees were or anything. I am not privy to that. That is all up to Conor, not me.

‘I do not know what the financials were, whether it was 50/50 or 60/40, I just know that is how Chris Eubank Jr. is.’
