Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected move to Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season has been officially confirmed. Scuderia Ferrari announced that Hamilton will join their team on a multi-year contract, marking the end of his 12-season partnership with Mercedes.

In an exclusive interview with Sports Illustrated’s Lydia Mee for Williams Racing and Michelob ULTRA’s “Lap of Legends” campaign, the illustrious four-time Formula 1 champion, Alain Prost, delves into the rich history of motorsport. While Alan was asked about Lewis Hamilton’s decision to change the team he said, “I can understand his decision because obviously when you are in a team like Mercedes, when they did not win a race for two years and they are really struggling to go back to the front, and at his age he has said, ‘Okay, why not try something different’.’

“It’s good for the sport because everybody’s going to watch. You could have an idea, but the idea or the perception you could have today is going to be different next year at the same stage, because he will be one year older and will he find his motivation back being at Ferrari?” he ended.

How the move will impact Lewis Hamilton and Ferrari?

After a prolonged period of dominance, Mercedes faced challenges adapting to the new 2022 rules. With the team struggling to regain its competitive edge, Hamilton, at 39 years old, decided to explore new horizons. His departure from Mercedes was a tough decision, given his long association with the team since he was 13 years old. However, he expressed excitement about taking on a fresh challenge with Ferrari.

Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes had initially been believed to run until the end of 2025. However, it appears that the deal included an exit clause for the second year, allowing him to explore other opportunities. As a result, 2024 will be his final season with the Silver Arrows.

Lewis Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is intriguing for both the driver and the team. Ferrari, too, faces questions about whether this decision will pay off. The Italian squad hopes that the regulation changes in 2026 will provide an opportunity for Hamilton to make an impact. However, the question remains: Is this a good move for both parties?
