I Like That Kind of Challenge: Canelo Alvarez Still Wants “Difficult” Oleksandr Usyk Fight At Catchweight

Canelo Alvarez may be having all kinds of ventures at the current stage of his professional boxing career, but the thought of facing Oleksandr Usyk is still in his mind.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Oleksandr Usyk was speculated at cruiserweight or catchweight

Last year, after Usyk defeated Anthony Joshua for the first time and became the new and reigning unified heavyweight champion, there were conversations of arranging a fight between him and Canelo, the undisputed champion at 168.

Usyk, who is a former undisputed cruiserweight champion and has a smaller stature compared to other top heavyweights, was in talks for a drop down to take on Canelo either at 200 or at 201-pound catchweight.

However this year, Canelo went on to face WBA Light Heavyweight champ Dmitry Bivol and suffered his first career defeat in nine years, while Usyk defeated AJ for the second time in their rematch.

While he prepares for a trilogy against longtime rival Gennadiy Golovkin later this month, aside from rematch talks with Bivol, Canelo revealed to Fighthype that he’s still looking for an encounter with the Ukrainian, despite admitting that it would be no walk in the park for him.

“It’s difficult, but I don’t care,” said Alvarez on facing Usyk, “I like that kind of challenge.”

“It’s going to be difficult, I know, but I love boxing,” the 32-year-old went on, “I love being in that kind of situation.” [H/T talkSPORT]

Usyk, meanwhile, is in talks for an undisputed title clash against recently un-retired WBC champion Tyson Fury, but he had also liked the idea of facing Canelo at cruiserweight- but only if he gets to keep his heavyweight titles.

“Canelo is a handsome man,” Usyk said back in April, “If he wants to box with me at cruiserweight, then I can go down there. But on condition that I still have my heavyweight belts because I’ll go back there later.” [H/T talkSPORT]
