Former unified light-welterweight world champion boxer Amir Khan has found himself in trouble with the law in driving related offense once again, as the Briton is under investigation by the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) for using his mobile phone while driving, which is considered to be an offense in the UK.

Amir Khan went live from his mobile while driving his SUV

On Christmas Day, Khan was seen on a live stream with his fans online, while the boxer was on the steering of his SUV and was out driving around his hometown of Bolton. He had posted the eight-minute clip on YouTube and later deleted it, but the Greater Manchester Police came to know about it on the second day of January, a week after the incident.

“On Sunday, 2 January 2021, GMP was made aware of a video on social media which appears to have been filmed whilst driving a vehicle. Police are currently investigating it,” the Greater Manchester Police was quoted by The Sun.

In the clip, which was viewed for almost 40000 times, Khan was seen driving along with a friend in his SUV, while he was looking at his mobile, reading messages and giving shoutouts to his supporters. Even though the mobile was out of his hand, it is illegal in the UK to call or text by using a hand-held device while driving, except for emergencies.

“He is a danger to society,” said one agitated viewer who saw the stream, “Too many people have died as a result of this kind of recklessness. It’s the reason it’s against the law. It’s illegal to take your eyes off the road and read text and social media messages.”

“Driver distraction can be deadly and using a hand-held phone at the wheel is never worth the risk,” said Mary Williams OBE, the chief exec of road safety charity Brake.

Back in 2007, Amir Khan was slapped with a six month driving ban and was fined £1,000 after he was convicted of careless driving for hitting a pedestrial on a pelican crossing in the center of Bolton. A year later, he was fined £1,000 once again along with a 42-day ban for excessive speeding on the M62 motorway at over 140mph.
