WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed a heavyweight clash between Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr, in the wake of Wilder’s comeback win over Robert Helenius over the weekend, which had impressed Sulaiman.

Back on 15th October, the former WBC heavyweight champion added another knockout win to his pro record in less than three minutes against Helenius this October 15th night at the Barclays Center in New York City.

“It was impressive,” Mauricio Sulaiman commented on Wilder’s win during an appearance on Coffee Tuesday. “It was a show of power.”

The 36-year-old knockout artist made easy work of his Finnish opponent, landing three punches in the fight, with the third one- a right hand that knocked Helenius out ten seconds from the end of the first round.

“Wilder hits very hard, but he had been inactive,” he went on, “And after two complicated defeats you don’t know how the mind comes, but I saw it as in its best moments”.

Eliminator between Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Jr will be announced at WBC Convention

“In the convention, all the final eliminatory rounds that include Ruiz-Wilder will be ordered,” Sulaiman stated, “It will be the official announcement there at the convention.”

If the fight materializes, Sulaiman opines that due to the power of “Destroyer”s fists, it would be a great fight, in addition to the fact that Ruiz could confuse the American due to his height.

“Andy Ruiz is a boxer of great diversity, he is a brutal puncher,” he commented, “But the styles make the fights, ‘El Destroyer’ is much shorter than Wilder, he can be complicated”.

Asked about the chances of the fight taking place in Mexico, Sulaiman said that if that opportunity opens up, they will do everything possible.

“It would be wonderful to see Ruiz-Wilder here, it would be spectacular. And if the window opens we will do everything we can to bring it,” concluded Sulaiman.
