Tyon Grant-Foster, the Grand Canyon University Antelopes’ (GCU) inspirational leader, is a big part of why the team is ready for a deep run in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament.

Grant-Foster’s path to becoming the WAC Player of the Year is a narrative woven with threads of resilience. After enduring two heart surgeries and a two-year hiatus from the game he loves, Grant-Foster has not only returned to the court but has done so with an unparalleled zeal that has seen him become GCU’s first WAC scoring champion since DeWayne Russell in 2016-17.

Tyon Grant-Foster: The Comeback Kid

It’s quite amazing how far Grant-Foster has come in his college basketball career. A major medical ailment that required two heart surgeries in 2021 hindered his career after he had a bright start at the University of Kansas. In the beginning, doctors told him he might not be able to play.

Grant-Foster’s towering presence is matched only by his towering determination. His first season with GCU has been nothing short of a revelation. Leading the WAC in scoring with an average of 19.4 points per game, he has defied the 16-month gap wrought by a medical emergency that nearly claimed his life

The leadership of Grant-Foster has been crucial in helping GCU achieve the best conference record of 27-4. They won the top seed in the WAC Tournament and a bye to the semifinals. With Grant-Foster leading the team, GCU has a good chance of winning the conference and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament.
