Mercedes is keenly aware of the missed opportunity with Max Verstappen. A few years ago, Verstappen was on the team’s radar, but he ultimately signed with Red Bull Racing. Since then, Verstappen has become one of the most successful and exciting drivers in Formula 1. Toto Wolff is determined not to repeat history by letting another potential superstar slip through their fingers.

According to recent reports from Corriere dello Sport, Italian racing prodigy Kimi Antonelli is poised to secure a coveted seat at Mercedes for the 2025 Formula 1 season. The whispers in the paddock suggest that Antonelli’s impressive private tests have left a lasting impression on the Mercedes management, leading to serious consideration for a contract.

Kimi Antonelli, at just 17 years old, has already turned heads in the motorsport world. Antonelli’s consistency, speed, and adaptability behind the wheel have made him a standout prospect.

Antonelli recently completed a two-day test with Mercedes at the Red Bull Ring. The team provided him with their 2021 challenger, the W12. Despite snow curtailing his first planned day of running, Antonelli made the most of the dry second day. Over the two days, he covered approximately 115 laps (equivalent to 500 kilometers) on the Austrian track.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has openly acknowledged Antonelli as a potential candidate to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton in 2025. However, Wolff’s decision hinges on other factors, including whether Max Verstappen decides to leave Red Bull. With several options available, Antonelli’s stellar junior career positions him as a strong contender.
