Baltimore Orioles pitcher Zach Eflin had a brutal quote about the team’s decision to fire manager Brandon Hyde earlier Saturday.
The Orioles fired Hyde on Saturday after a 15-28 start. The team made the move despite the Orioles winning a total of 192 games over the past two seasons with Hyde at the helm.
Eflin did not mince words when he blamed the players for what happened to their manager.
“It sucks. It’s as a result of us sucking,” Eflin said.
Eflin is in his second season with the Orioles, so he was part of last year’s success and this year’s failure.
As Eflin alluded to, he has also had this happen to him before. He was part of the 2022 Philadelphia Phillies team that fired Joe Girardi midway through the season. That team wound up going to the World Series under replacement Rob Thomson, so he knows there is some precedent for a managerial change actually helping a roster.
The Orioles have a long way back to salvage anything from this season after a 15-28 start. Eflin has actually been one of the team’s bright spots, having posted a 3.13 ERA in four starts so far. Some of his teammates will need to follow his lead to turn things around.
