The Texas Rangers made a big change to their coaching staff on Sunday.

The Rangers have fired Donnie Ecker, who had been serving as the team’s offensive coordinator. The team’s lack of scoring had been a persistent concern for general manager Chris Young.

The Rangers won on Sunday 8-1 against the Seattle Mariners to improve to 17-18. However, the team’s offense has been an issue.

Texas’ batting average (.224) ranks 13 out of 15 teams in the American League. Their .636 team OPS is similarly 13th. The Rangers had also been on a big slide over the last few weeks. Since beginning the season 14-9, they have gone 3-9, which had been weighing negatively on Young.

Prior to Sunday’s game, the Rangers had gone 10 out of 11 games without scoring more than three runs in a game.

“After lengthy discussions and deliberations, we feel now is the appropriate time to provide our hitters with a new voice as we pursue goals of winning the division and reaching the postseason,” Young said in a statement. “We are extremely grateful to Donnie for all that he has accomplished here with the Rangers.”
