Two former swimmers on the University of Kentucky’s swim team have filed a lawsuit against the school, its Athletic Director Mitch Barnhart, and former head coach Lars Jorgensen. The lawsuit, reported by ESPN, alleges sexual assault by Jorgensen and the university’s failure to address prior reports of his inappropriate behavior towards female athletes.

This lawsuit casts a dark shadow over the Kentucky swimming program and raises serious questions about the university’s handling of potential misconduct by staff members.

The lawsuit details disturbing allegations against Jorgensen. One plaintiff, former team captain Briggs Alexander, claims Jorgensen “forcibly raped” her during her time on the team (2014-2018). The lawsuit also details alleged inappropriate behavior towards another unnamed assistant coach, who claims Jorgensen attempted to have sex with her.

The lawsuit further alleges that the university “purposefully” disregarded multiple credible reports of Jorgensen’s inappropriate behavior. According to the lawsuit, one coach reported their concerns to the university’s Title IX office, which is responsible for handling complaints of sex-based discrimination.

Lars Jorgensen’s Resignation and University’s Response

Jorgensen abruptly resigned from his position as head coach in July 2023 amid an ongoing investigation. At the time, the university cited “philosophical differences” as the reason for his departure. The lawsuit suggests these “philosophical differences” may have been linked to the allegations against Jorgensen.

The University of Kentucky has yet to officially respond to the lawsuit. However, a university spokesperson has stated that the school takes “any allegations of misconduct very seriously” but cannot discuss specific personnel issues.

The lawsuit raises concerns about the university’s handling of prior reports about Jorgensen’s behavior. If the allegations are true, the university may have failed to take appropriate action to protect its student athletes.

This lawsuit could have significant ramifications for the University of Kentucky, its athletic department, and former coach Lars Jorgensen. If the allegations are proven true, Jorgensen could face criminal charges. The university could also face sanctions from the NCAA for failing to adequately address potential misconduct.
