Vikings Are Counting on This ‘Bridge’ QB If They Can’t Get a Good Deal in the NFL Draft

The Minnesota Vikings find themselves at a crossroads as they prepare for the upcoming NFL Draft. Enter Sam Darnold, the former third overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL Draft. Darnold’s journey has been a rollercoaster ride, but the Vikings are banking on him to be their bridge to the future.

According to a tweet by @nflrums, they might be willing to consider Sam Darnold, recently acquired in free agency, as their starter if acquiring a top QB prospect in the draft proves too expensive:

Kirk Cousins’ exit leaves a void in the Vikings’ offense. While he provided stability and decent production, the team craved a more dynamic presence at quarterback, someone who could elevate the offense to a higher level. The draft presents an opportunity to find a franchise quarterback, but acquiring a top prospect often comes at a steep cost in terms of draft capital.

Sam Darnold, the former third overall pick by the New York Jets, arrives in Minnesota with a chance to revitalize his career. His tenure with the Jets was marred by inconsistency and a lack of surrounding talent. The Vikings believe a fresh start and a more supportive offensive system could unlock his potential.

The decision to potentially roll with Darnold as the starter carries inherent risks. His past performance raises concerns about his ability to consistently make winning plays. However, there’s also a chance that a change of scenery and a more experienced coaching staff can unlock his talent. If Darnold thrives, he could become a viable long-term option for the Vikings. If he struggles, the team might be forced to revisit the quarterback position sooner rather than later.

For Darnold to succeed, the Vikings need to surround him with a talented supporting cast. A strong offensive line that can protect him and a reliable group of receivers who can create separation is crucial. Investing in the offensive line and potentially adding a receiving weapon in the draft would significantly improve Darnold’s chances of success.
